FDA grants emergency use authorization for Capstar and generic nitenpyram to prevent and treat New World screwworm in dogs and cats

Sep 3, 2026·read at fda press ↗RegulatoryPositive

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization for Capstar (nitenpyram) tablets and updated the EUA for the generic Nitenpyram Tablets. Both products are now authorized to prevent and treat New World screwworm infestations in dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that weigh at least two pounds and are at least four weeks old.

Previously, the EUA for Nitenpyram Tablets covered only treatment and no product was approved for prevention. The FDA highlighted that this addresses a previously unmet need for veterinarians and pet owners, providing a tool to protect animals from this parasitic infestation.

While the risk of New World screwworm is low for most U.S. pets, the agency advises heightened vigilance for animals that travel to or return from regions where the parasite has been reported, including certain areas south of the U.S. border. Signs of infestation such as maggots or foul odors should prompt immediate veterinary care.
