FDA chief Marty Makary resigns, ending turbulent tenure

FDA chief Marty Makary has resigned, ending a tenure described as turbulent with leadership upheaval, mass layoffs, political pressure and public disputes with drugmakers.

President Trump announced the resignation, confirming a Politico report, and named deputy commissioner Kyle Diamantis as acting commissioner.

Makary, a prolific medical researcher and author known for work on patient safety and criticism of public health responses, was appointed by Trump in November 2024; the Department of Health and Human Services declined comment.
