PCOS renamed PMOS after decade-long scientific effort
A new name for the condition formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been introduced.
The term polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) was presented in a paper published in The Lancet and at the European Congress of Endocrinology in Prague.
The change reflects a consensus among clinicians, researchers, and patient advocates after more than ten years of debate, aiming to better describe the metabolic and endocrine aspects of the disorder.
Some concerns remain, such as retaining "ovarian" which may limit recognition of potential male presentations, and the previous name’s implication of ovarian cysts that can lead to misdiagnosis.
