Juul receives FDA clearance for new e-cigarette with optional age-verification feature

Juul Labs announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted the company permission to market an updated version of its flagship vaping device.

The new model, called Juul2, includes an optional age-verification system that aims to limit access by under-age users. The feature can be activated by retailers or consumers to confirm a buyer’s age before the device is used.

The clearance marks the first time Juul can sell a revised version of its product since its launch over a decade ago, after years of legal challenges and settlements that cost the company about $3 billion and led to workforce reductions.

Juul said it will offer the device with a range of adult-focused flavors beyond tobacco and menthol, while emphasizing that the product is not intended for people who do not already smoke.
