Long-term unemployment pushes many biopharma professionals to quit job searches

Aug 27, 2026·read at BioSpace ↗Negative

A recent BioSpace LinkedIn poll shows that about one-quarter of biopharma workers who have been unemployed for six months or more have stopped looking for new positions, and a similar share are considering doing so.

The survey of 686 respondents found 26% had been job-searching for six to eleven months and 27% for a year or longer, highlighting a growing pool of long-term unemployed talent in the sector.

Career coaches cited limited opportunities and burnout as key reasons for the drop-off, noting that some professionals are shifting to consulting or leaving the industry altogether.

The trend mirrors broader U.S. labor data, where roughly 1.8 million people were classified as long-term unemployed in July, a slight decline from June but still a sizable figure.

Experts warn that abandoning the job hunt can be harmful, and they recommend strategies such as networking, skill refreshers, and exploring alternative roles to stay engaged in the field.
