NIH-funded studies often omit sex-specific results, study finds

Apr 27, 2026·read at STAT ↗RegulatoryNegative

A new analysis of NIH-funded papers reveals that less than half report outcomes separately for men and women.

Researchers examined 574 articles published between 2017 and 2024; while 61% included both sexes, only 44% presented sex-disaggregated results.

The shortfall persists despite the NIH’s 2016 policy urging consideration of sex as a biological variable, which could limit the applicability of findings across genders.

The authors suggest stronger enforcement or clearer guidance may be needed to improve sex-inclusive reporting.
