Trump administration eyes Heidi Overton as next FDA commissioner

President Donald Trump is reported to be preparing a nomination for Heidi Overton to become the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, according to multiple news outlets.

Overton is a medical doctor who completed a general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins University. She later served as a White House fellow in the first Trump administration and, after the 2020 election, became chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute, leading its Center for a Healthy America.

If confirmed by the Senate, Overton would replace interim deputy commissioner Kyle Diamantas, who has been running the agency since Marty Makary stepped down in May. The FDA has faced significant turnover and staff reductions during the current administration, raising questions about the direction of its regulatory agenda.
