American Cancer Society cancels long-running alcohol industry gala amid optics concerns

The American Cancer Society announced it will not hold its annual Wine and Spirits Industry Gala that was scheduled for October at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan.

The gala had been a major fundraiser, generating at least $22 million over the years from alcohol-industry executives, but the event drew criticism for appearing to conflict with the society’s cancer-prevention mission.

ACS said the decision reflects an ongoing review of how its events align with its mission and prevention guidance, and the October gathering has been cancelled.
