Moderna and Merck report success for personalized mRNA vaccine in late-stage melanoma trial

Aug 19, 2026·read at STAT ↗Positive readoutPositive

Moderna and Merck announced that their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine succeeded in a late-stage melanoma study. The vaccine, called intismeran, was evaluated in a randomized Phase 3 trial, the first of its kind for neoantigen vaccines.

In the trial the vaccine was given alongside Merck's Keytruda to patients whose melanoma had been surgically removed, a setting known as adjuvant therapy. Researchers reported that the combination slowed the return of melanoma and reduced its spread to other parts of the body.

Detailed efficacy data were not released at the time of the announcement, but the positive readout suggests the approach could be a powerful new tool in oncology.

If the findings are confirmed, the result could pave the way for similar personalized mRNA vaccines in other cancers, offering new hope for patients and clinicians alike.
