California’s new CalRx insulin label aims for affordable access but faces slow rollout

Aug 13, 2026·read at STAT ↗Neutral

California launched a state‑branded insulin label, CalRx, this year to provide lower‑cost insulin to patients without insurance. The pens, marked with the state’s grizzly bear logo, are now stocked at a Walgreens in San Francisco’s Japantown.

Pharmacist Margaret On says she keeps the long‑acting insulin pens on hand in case an uninsured patient or an emergency needs them, even though she has not yet dispensed any.

The presence of the pens in the pharmacy does not yet translate into prescriptions being filled, suggesting the program’s rollout is slower than anticipated.

Governor Gavin Newsom continues to promote the initiative as part of his broader effort to make health care more affordable, but the early uptake challenges highlight the difficulty of scaling such state‑level drug pricing solutions.
