Vaping and cannabis use hit record highs among U.S. young adults in 2025, survey finds

Aug 12, 2026·read at STAT ↗Negative

A new national survey by the University of Michigan shows vaping and cannabis use among U.S. young adults reached record levels in 2025.

Past‑30‑day nicotine vape use rose to 19%, more than triple the level when the question was added in 2017. Cannabis use in the same period was reported by 29% of 19‑30‑year‑olds, just below the previous year’s peak, with daily use at a record 12%.

The findings contrast with declining use of alcohol and cigarettes. The data come from the Monitoring the Future survey, which samples about 20,000 Americans aged 19‑65 and is funded by the NIH.

NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse director noted the mixed picture of substance‑use trends, highlighting concerns for public health as vaping and cannabis consumption climb among younger adults.
