Study finds cancer patients now wait longer for treatment than a decade ago

A new analysis of more than 2.7 million cancer cases shows that the interval between diagnosis and the start of therapy has grown over the past ten years. The researchers examined records from a national cancer database covering the period from 2012 to 2023 and focused on stage 1 to 3 tumors that were initially considered suitable for surgery.

Across all six cancer types evaluated, patients today experience longer delays before treatment begins compared with a decade ago. The authors point to factors such as the increasing complexity of care pathways, shortages in the medical workforce, and the time required for insurance pre‑authorization as possible contributors.

The findings highlight a growing challenge for oncology providers and may have implications for treatment outcomes, as extended waiting periods can heighten patient anxiety and potentially allow disease progression.
