Medicaid to End Funding for Gender-Affirming Surgeries and Hormone Therapy for Transgender Youth

The Trump administration announced that Medicaid will no longer cover gender-affirming surgeries and hormone treatments for minors.

The change also applies to the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which will stop paying for these services for individuals under 19, though mental-health services will remain covered.

The policy is slated to take effect on Oct. 13. States and private insurers may still choose to provide coverage, and many states have already enacted bans on such care.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services did not comment on the expected cost impact, and the announcement follows a broader set of actions targeting transgender individuals since the administration returned to office.
