Michigan reports first two U.S. deaths linked to cyclospora outbreak

State health officials said two people died in Michigan, marking the first confirmed U.S. deaths from cyclospora, a microscopic parasite.

Both victims had pre‑existing health conditions that may have been worsened by the intestinal infection and dehydration.

The parasite spreads through food contaminated with human feces, often via produce irrigated or washed with tainted water. The CDC has linked lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell locations in five states to the broader outbreak.

Since May 1, more than 4,100 cases have been confirmed and over 7,400 probable cases are under investigation across 41 states, setting a U.S. record.
