Merck has signed voluntary licensing agreements to allow generic manufacturers to produce its investigational monthly HIV PrEP pill, alimatravir, before any regulatory submission.
The agreements cover seven generic companies - Aspen Pharmacare, Quality Chemical Industries, UCL Kenya for sub-Saharan Africa, and Aurobindo, Cipla, Emcure, Viatris for India - marking the first time African producers are included in an initial HIV-prevention license.
Merck said the move aims to give people in high-burden regions more prevention options, pending successful phase-3 trial results and eventual approval. African health officials welcomed the early engagement.
