Maui wildfire study proposes new rural health model for disaster recovery

Jul 22, 2026·read at STAT ↗Positive

Researchers Alika Maunakea and Ruben Juarez are leading one of the largest investigations into the long‑term health effects of the 2023 Lahaina wildfires. The study follows more than 20 participants, scientists and physicians to understand disease risk from both wild and urban fire exposure.

The team discovered that the research effort has become a critical piece of health infrastructure for Maui's rural communities. By bringing medical equipment and expertise to remote areas, the project is filling gaps left after the disaster.

Based on these findings, the investigators plan to establish a nonprofit organization that will continue health monitoring and research in the region. They see this as a new model for rural health that could be replicated in other disaster‑prone areas.

If successful, the model could help protect people exposed to future fires by providing ongoing surveillance, early detection of health issues, and a framework for rapid response.
