Broad Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital and Jackson Laboratory launch nonprofit to advance affordable gene therapies for rare diseases

The Broad Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital and Maine’s Jackson Laboratory announced a new collaboration to develop gene‑based treatments for rare genetic disorders. The three institutions will operate through a newly created nonprofit called the Center for Therapeutic Genetics.

The Center’s purpose is to generate precision medicines and then share the underlying methods, data and training with other clinicians. By making the knowledge openly available, the partners hope to speed the creation of personalized therapies.

A key goal is to treat gene‑therapy delivery more like a standard clinical procedure, such as an organ transplant, so doctors will not need to obtain separate regulatory clearance for each individual use.

The initiative comes at a time when only a limited number of gene‑therapy products exist, leaving many families with rare diseases without viable options. By pooling resources and expertise, the collaboration aims to expand access and lower costs for patients.
