Geopolitical uncertainty dampens UK biotech IPO outlook despite record Q2 venture funding

Jul 19, 2026·read at Fierce Biotech ↗Neutral

Geopolitical uncertainty continues to weigh on the sentiment around initial public offerings for British biotech companies, according to an industry leader speaking to Fierce.

At the same time, the sector saw a five‑year high in second‑quarter venture capital funding, with £2.05 billion raised between April and June 2026.

The bulk of the money came from a £1.6 billion Series B round for Alphabet‑backed Isomorphic Labs, but even without that infusion the remaining £498 million raised was almost double the amount secured in the same quarter a year earlier.

The BioIndustry Association said the UK now accounts for 61% of Europe’s £3.3 billion biotech VC pool, reinforcing its status as the continent’s leading investment destination, while seed‑stage activity also remained strong.
