ADA blocks Diabetes Care editorial on conference controversy, sparking fresh turmoil

Jul 16, 2026·read at STAT ↗Negative

Turmoil at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has intensified after leaders prevented editors of its flagship journal, Diabetes Care, from publishing an editorial and first-person accounts about a recent controversy at the association’s annual meeting.

The dispute began when five diabetes specialists were escorted out of a conference center in New Orleans for distributing reprints of an editorial that raised concerns over federal research funding cuts.

The ADA issued an apology for the evictions and announced a formal review, but said it would delay publication of the pieces until the review’s outcome, amid disagreement over how the review is being conducted.

The spiked editorial and personal narratives have now been posted on an open-access platform, allowing the public to read the accounts despite the publication hold.
