Bipartisan bill calls for FTC and Treasury to assess U.S. reliance on foreign drug supplies

A group of bipartisan lawmakers has reintroduced legislation that would require the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Treasury to examine how heavily the United States depends on foreign-made prescription drugs and ingredients.

The bill seeks to determine whether this reliance, especially on countries such as China, creates national‑security risks and whether moving domestic manufacturing abroad could worsen those vulnerabilities.

Lawmakers cite past warnings, including a Department of Defense watchdog report from five years ago, that an overreliance on overseas suppliers could jeopardize drug availability and national security.
