Ebola outbreak in Congo tops 2,000 cases as health workers strike over unpaid wages

The Congo Ministry of Health reported on July 15 that confirmed Ebola cases have risen to 2,011, with 754 deaths, making it the fastest-growing outbreak on record.

Health workers at Bunia General Hospital, the region's largest medical center, walked off the job on Wednesday, blocking the entrance and demanding overdue pay for work under hazardous conditions.

The World Health Organization says more than 100 health-care workers have become infected since the outbreak began in mid‑May, and contact-tracing coverage remains at about 67 percent.

With 753 patients still in isolation and 366 recovered, officials say the epidemic is outpacing response efforts, and the strike threatens further disruption of care.
