The Opportunity At BMS, we're not just building software — we're building the architectural foundations that will define how a global pharmaceutical organisation harnesses AI through to 2030 and beyond. As a Senior Manager in Software Engineering and Full Stack, you'll be the principal technical force behind a shared, production-grade platform that powers analytics, digital products, and autonomous AI workers across our Product Development & Supply (PDS) organisation. This is a deeply hands-on, senior individual-contributor role. You won't manage people — you'll set the technical bar through architecture, reference implementations, and engineering excellence. Working within our Analytics & AI Enablement Architecture & Components team, you'll sit alongside UI, UX, AI Engineering, and Architecture specialists in a globally distributed, multidisciplinary environment, helping to shape not just what we build, but how the entire organisation builds it.
What You'll Do
Architect a Multi-Service Platform at Scale
• Design and build distributed, multi-service platforms that orchestrate work across autonomous services and agents — with conditional routing, parallel execution, and error recovery
• Treat the platform as an internal SaaS/PaaS: shared SDKs, service contracts, and reusable components that solution teams consume rather than rebuild from scratch
• Build graph-based orchestration workflows that combine LLM reasoning, business logic, real-time data integration, and enterprise security patterns
• Create extensible component libraries and platform patterns that serve multiple business domains simultaneously
Build Production-Grade Backend Systems
• Develop production FastAPI (or similar) applications with async I/O patterns for persistence and external services
• Implement Server-Sent Events (SSE) and WebSocket protocols for real-time streaming responses
• Design APIs and event-driven architectures for orchestration and service-to-service communication
• Build robust error handling, graceful degradation, and enterprise security integration (SSO, access control), deploying containerised services via CI/CD
Lead Frontend Architecture & Unified Experience
• Build modern web frontends (React) and architect micro-frontend and Module Federation compositions so independently developed modules form one seamless, coherent experience
• Develop and steward a shared component library and design system used across the entire platform
• Design AI-enhanced UI patterns for streaming responses, conversational interfaces, and analytical visualisation
Make MCP a First-Class Platform Capability
• Design, build, and host production MCP servers that expose platform services and tools — ensuring the same underlying capabilities power both the web UI and Claude Desktop with no divergence between the two
• Define golden-path patterns, shared MCP servers, and reusable templates so solution teams can ship dual-intent solutions rapidly
• Establish MCP hosting, versioning, security, and operational standards for enterprise-grade integration
Integrate and Orchestrate LLMs at Scale
• Integrate cloud LLM providers (AWS Bedrock or comparable) into platform services
• Design prompt management with versioning, templating, and dynamic compilation
• Implement conversation and state persistence (e.g., Redis checkpointing) for multi-turn agentic workflows
• Build standardised tool-calling that connects agents and external clients to data sources, with the Model Context Protocol as the primary integration surface
Drive Reusability, Observability & Optimisation
• Treat internal developers as customers — deliver golden-path templates, clear contracts, and documentation that accelerate delivery across the organisation
• Define versioning, contracts, and backward compatibility standards across the component ecosystem
• Build observability, tracing, and monitoring for performance, latency, cost, and quality — and continuously optimise resource and token usage across production workflows
Collaborate and Mentor Across the Organisation
• Partner with cloud, AI, data, and UX engineers to integrate full-stack work with infrastructure, agentic capabilities, and interaction design
• Align with Enterprise engineering and governance teams on shared standards and controls
• Provide technical mentorship on system design, solution patterns, and platform best practices — and contribute to architecture reviews and documentation
What You'll Bring
Education
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, AI, Data Science, or a related field
Experience — Required
• 6+ years of software engineering experience with deep full-stack delivery, including production experience building LLM-powered or agentic applications
• Strong Python expertise, including async patterns (asyncio, async/await) and Python-based automation
• Production experience with async web frameworks (FastAPI or similar), REST, and event-driven and streaming architectures (WebSocket/SSE, queues, streams)
• Strong working knowledge of modern web frontends (React) and micro-frontend/Module Federation composition
• Demonstrated experience designing distributed, multi-service systems and building an internal platform, SaaS/PaaS, or shared developer platform
• Experience with agentic orchestration frameworks (LangGraph preferred; LangChain, CrewAI, Autogen or similar) and cloud LLM providers (AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, or OpenAI)
• Strong platform and cloud depth: Docker, Kubernetes/Amazon EKS, infrastructure-as-code (CloudFormation), Git and CI/CD, service mesh, policy-as-code (OPA/Gatekeeper), and production observability (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki) on AWS
• Experience owning platform governance, security, and self-service onboarding — IAM/SSO, group-based authorisation, and policy-as-code
Critical Platform & Agentic Systems Experience
• Built autonomous, multi-step systems that perform complex analytical tasks well beyond simple chatbots
• Designed distributed platforms with service orchestration, conditional logic, and state management
• Developed and hosted production MCP servers with demonstrated adoption across capabilities
• Delivered dual-intent solutions where the same services power both a web experience and an LLM/desktop client via MCP
• Designed shared SDKs and contracts and managed API evolution across many consumers
• Prompt engineering at scale — templating, versioning, optimisation — and a strong understanding of agentic design patterns (ReAct, Plan-and-Execute, tool-use agents)
Skills & Competencies
• Excellent communication and the ability to set technical direction and influence decisions without direct authority
• Strong problem-solving capability in globally distributed, cross-functional teams
• Hands-on experience implementing Agentic AI solutions and/or MCP
• Relevant cloud certification (e.g., AWS) is a plus
Advantageous Experience
• Prior experience in global life sciences, pharma, or supply chain — particularly within Product Development & Supply
• Experience in regulated environments (GxP, GDPR, PII) and embedding compliance into platform design from the outset
• Experience scaling an internal platform across multiple product and domain teams while managing contract and dependency complexity
• Experience working internationally with globally dispersed teams
Why This Role? This is a rare opportunity to operate as a principal-level technical authority at a company actively investing in AI at enterprise scale. You'll have the freedom to architect from first principles, set standards that propagate across an entire organisation, and build the shared foundations that autonomous AI-powered workflows will run on for years to come. If you're a full-stack engineer with a platform mindset, a passion for agentic AI, and the technical depth to lead without authority — this is the role built for you.
