You will be located here, in the heart of Vienna, no matter if you work on a mySugr®, Accu-Chek®, navify® or any other Roche product or solution. Here's what we're looking for:
We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Architect to join the Architecture sub-chapter within Patient Insights Software Applications (PIxSW), where we design digital health and Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) products spanning mobile apps, connected devices and cloud services, all built on Roche's shared mobile and digital platforms. You will own software architecture end to end, across mobile, backend and cloud: the systems, the integration boundaries and the decisions that tie them together. The role is roughly 80% architecture, design and technical leadership and 20% prototyping, and you are expected to stay hands-on as needed. You lead through the clarity of your designs, not through a reporting line, in a small, senior group that relies on each other to reason from a mobile screen to a cloud data platform.
We are also changing how software gets built. RIS is one of the first teams at Roche to make AI a real part of engineering, and we are building out an AI-augmented software development lifecycle (aSDLC). We want an architect who already works this way: someone who uses agentic coding tools like Claude Code as part of their normal flow, can tell a solid result from a plausible but wrong one, and can raise the team's game in how we apply AI to design, build and review.
Travel: around 10%, mostly between our Vienna and Sant Cugat sites and for the Roche architecture community.
Your upcoming mission:
Architecture and design:
• Own architecture designs across native mobile, backend and the navify cloud, treating the app-to-cloud integration as a first-class part of the design
• Write technical designs, architecture decision records and C4 models that a team can build from
• Make trade-offs explicit (cost, risk, time to value, reuse), and keep regulated and non-regulated parts of a product cleanly separated so it can cross into medical device territory
AI-augmented engineering (aSDLC)
• Help shape our aSDLC: bring agentic tools (e.g. Claude, ChatGPT) into how we design, prototype, document and review, and show the team what good use looks like
• Set the standards and guardrails that keep AI-assisted work reliable and accountable in a regulated setting, with a human owning the result
Cloud, backend and platform
• Design backend services on our Java and Spring foundation, modular and well bounded
• Design data and integration flows across the navify Platform (identity, consent, notifications, AI, FHIR) and the cloud beneath it
• Reuse first: contribute to the reusable blueprint every new product starts from, extend our shared mobile foundation and navify rather than rebuild, and promote proven pieces back
Technical leadership and direction
• Guide squads towards a clear technical direction, and help them decide when they are stuck between options
• Partner with our mobile experts and the Cloud and DevOps sub-chapter, adding cross-domain breadth rather than competing with their depth
• Raise the bar through design reviews, pairing and mentoring, and produce documentation that keeps products audit-ready
• Help shape the team's technical direction as one voice in a shared architecture capability
Essential skills for your mission:
• A strong track record as a Software Architect designing systems across mobile, backend and cloud rather than a single layer, with enough native mobile knowledge to partner well with specialists without being one yourself
• Depth in cloud and backend architecture: Java and Spring, modular and domain-driven design, APIs and integration, cloud-native patterns and DevOps, including CI/CD (experience of a major cloud provider a plus)
• You already build with agentic AI tools like Claude Code, get real leverage from them, know where they break down, and want to push our aSDLC work forward
• The ability to turn architecture into things a team can act on (technical designs, decision records, C4 models) and to help a team reach a decision
• Experience in regulated or safety-critical environments; SaMD or other medical device software is a strong plus
• Strong communication and the ability to bring people with you, since you lead through expertise rather than authority
• Comfortable making trade-offs and being challenged on them, and happy to get hands-on with prototypes when it takes the risk out of a design
Bonus skills:
• FHIR and healthcare data standards, identity and consent platforms, reference architecture or platform teams, deeper SaMD experience.

In Austria, we have a legal obligation to disclose the minimum salary according to our collective agreement, which is gross EUR 3.843 - per month for this position. But! Rest assured, we offer amazing competitive compensation packages which take into consideration current market trends, therefore you can expect a higher offer that reflects your experience level.
